Beware: Sextortion emails on the rise

New email scam on the rise. Scammers are sending out emails claiming they stole your password and hacked your webcam while you were watching porn. There are many variants but it mostly includes a password on the subject line. It also states that they have hacked your computer, installed keyloggers, malware, and recorded you via webcam.

Bottom line is, they extort you for money saying that they will reveal your adult-website habits and send video of you to your contacts unless you send them bitcoin which the amount varies from one email to another.

At one point in time, this password might still be working with one of your accounts due to the massive breach threat happened some time ago when databases got stolen from LinkedIn, Yahoo, eBay and others.

They are pretty much bluffing about the video or access to your contact list. On top of that, they don’t have malicious code on your computer. Truth be told, they are taking a password from a database that’s available online. Attaching it to the template before sending it to you, and hoping you’re scared enough to believe their story and send them bitcoin.

In this scenario, might as well update your passwords. We never know, you might have been too lazy to change them in the first place.

It is also good practice to disconnect webcams if not being used. Cover them up if it is on a laptop.

At the end of it all, do not send bitcoins or payment to the scammers.
